(2)

 means (单复数同形)可以指人或物，其含义为“手段”或“工具”；这个词不仅用于具体的东西，也可以用于抽象的意念。如：means of production 生产资料，means of living 生活资料

 instrumentality 可以与means换用，但不能与 instrument 换用，因为这个词的含义是对手段的“有效利用”。如：by(或 through) the instrumentality (or means) of (借助于…)

如果不能有效地利用新闻自由，就无法维护自由。

 agent 的原义是“起作用的人”或“办事的人”，现在的常用含义是“代理人”，即区别于筹划人或行使意志者

 agency 与 instrumentality 的区别在于：agency 的内涵是“引起某结果的原因”，即“媒介”。如：某些疾病的传播是借助昆虫进行的(through the agency of insects)

 medium 的含义是“介质”，没有这种“介质”便达不到一定的目的
